Ange Postecoglou still has the support of Spurs fanbase – says Tim Sherwood
The Tottenham faithful are renowned for their passion, but recent performances have sparked a range of emotions, leaving Spurs fans and pundits questioning whether Ange Postecoglou still holds their unwavering support—or if the cracks are beginning to show.
Former Tottenham coach Tim Sherwood has weighed in on the growing unrest among Spurs fans following their dramatic 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, a game that epitomised the frustrations of a season riddled with inconsistency.
Ange Postecoglou and Spurs under the Premier League spotlight
Postecoglou’s side, once riding high on a wave of optimism, now find themselves struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League’s top-four race.
Their latest defeat, marked by defensive frailty and questionable decision-making, saw Tottenham squander a two-goal lead against their London rivals.
It was a painful reminder of their earlier collapse this season against Brighton in the Premier League, where they similarly let a comfortable lead slip away.
The two penalties conceded added to the sense of despair at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which witnessed a disheartened home crowd by the final whistle.
Spurs’ recent form paints a concerning picture. Winless in their last three league games, they have slipped to 11th place, seven points adrift of the coveted Champions League spots. What was once a promising campaign—has now taken a downward turn, with more losses than wins in the league this season.
Despite the turbulence, Sherwood believes the fans’ relationship with Postecoglou remains a complex mix of frustration and lingering hope.
Tim Sherwood on the Spurs fans and Ange Postecoglou
Speaking on Matchday Live on Optus Sport, Sherwood delved into the emotions of the Spurs fanbase, particularly during their defeat to Chelsea.
He noted that despite the strong start, with Tottenham racing to a 2-0 lead within 11 minutes, there was an air of negativity among the crowd that mirrored the eventual outcome of the game.
He said: “At half-time, I felt like Chelsea were going to win the game and 2-0 down, and I think the crowd did as well, I just felt like there was a negativity amongst the punters, and they were just waiting for it to happen.
“And eventually, it did. Sancho smashes it into the bottom corner, and I just felt it was just gonna come, and I really believe that the fans here felt the same.
“I think it’s a mix, a lot of people wanted to be entertained—the last three Tottenham managers have not been doing that to them—and Postecoglou delivers that; he does not let anyone down on that front.
“Unfortunately, the highs are so high, and the lows are a little bit too low; there is no happy medium there, and negativity is in the results.
“If they were to win the game today, they would have gone four points off the top four, which would have been the objective at the start of the season.
“It is not the end of the world, but it is a tough moment for him, especially when you are losing a derby at home after being 2-0 up to Chelsea.”
Tim Sherwood on football’s unforgiving nature
He also reminded viewers of the transient nature of fan support in the modern game, pointing out how quickly fortunes can change with a few positive results.
“It can come back as quick as it goes away with these Tottenham fans, you get a result here today, if they were to win three or four nil, all of the sudden four points off the top four, everyone’s lifted, and the morale is high yet again.
“It is still very tight, and the objective is to finish in Champions League football, and they are still capable of doing that. But Tottenham could beat anyone on their day, but unfortunately, they can lose to anyone.”
Whether Postecoglou can steer the ship back on course remains to be seen, but the fans’ patience—though tested—is not yet fully eroded. A strong run of form could reignite belief, but the clock is ticking, and the stakes are as high as ever.
