Winter shutdown starts soon for US 75 projects in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) - A Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) spokeswoman gave 27 News an update on the ongoing major construction project on U.S. 75 Highway in Topeka.

KDOT has been working on three separate bridge repair projects on US 75 in Topeka. The first project is north of the Kansas River and includes 12 bridges in both directions along US 75. The second and third projects are over the Kansas River and the flyover to I-70 and Gage Boulevard.

Kate Craft with KDOT said all traffic control on northbound U.S. 75 has been removed for the winter shutdown period. All lanes will be open until work resumes next spring.

Traffic control on southbound U.S. 75 north of the Kansas River will likely remain in place until the end of the month when the winter shutdown goes into effect. Work will resume in both directions in the spring.

Craft said the contractor will be putting the final overlay down on the Westgate and flyover bridges this week or next, depending on weather conditions. She said there will be a minimum 21-day cure time. Because of the cure time, the southbound Westgate and flyover bridges will likely see lane reductions until January of 2025.

"Traffic control will then be removed, and traffic impacts should be little to none until the project is complete," Craft said.
