Lake Taghkanic State Park to expand 152-acres

0

TAGHKANIC, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Lake Taghkanic State Park will soon expand the park by 152 acres, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Preservation announced Nov. 21. The property expansion will allow for trail enhancements and will establish a buffer between the park and any development that could occur nearby.

According to the acquisition, the land was purchased by the Columbia Land Conservancy from previous owner Helene Jaffe and sold to state parks through the Environmental Protection Funds. The acres are part of the Mid-Hudson Wildlife Corridor; the purchase ensures the large unbroken forest will remain intact.

"I'm so pleased with this outcome," said Jaffe. "The enjoyment of the property by generations of our family and friends has been due, in large part to its proximity to and the resources of Lake Taghkanic State Park. It brings me great happiness to know that future generations – of people and wildlife – will also be able to enjoy the property for years to come."

The forest is critical for its wildlife habitats and drinking water access. Climate Change resiliency is also a factor, State Parks said.

The Columbia Land Conservancy President Troy Weldy and the Taconic Regional Director of New York State Parks Linda Cooper agree that the expansion will enhance the state park and its offerings for all.

"Purchasing this property is a win for the environment and everyone who enjoys visiting Lake Taghkanic State Park. Not only is this land incredible wildlife habitat, it will also make it possible to expand the park's trail system," Weldy said.

"This property will increase access to the outdoors for New Yorkers, will offer visitors increased hiking opportunities, and expand the habitat protection at Lake Taghkanic State Park," Cooper added.

State Parks said the acquired land will support the State's goal to conserve 30 percent of its lands and waters by 2030. The land is also part of the global 30x30 Initiative to protect the world's lands and waters.
