Report by Des Martin
After the overnight rain and various severe storm warnings it was pleasing to see the pitches playable. The Reds had a small squad of 17 but the manager was confident in all the players at his disposal. The front row contained two very competent props in Matty Somerville and Colin Devlin, the second row had youth and experience with Neil Lockhart and James Galbraith pairing up. The back row had Ross Findlater at 8 supported by Gabe Wlyie and Mayo Herdman.
The game started briskly with good control by the Reds. Unfortunately the moves often broke down or were penalised for various minor infringements. The Reds worked extremely hard and it was nearly thirty minutes before Eddie Beamish finished off a great move when the ball has been worked from a good forward ruck through all the hands to Gregor McLean, Jeff Martin and finally Eddie who went outside all the defence and beat them for speed to the line. Try Reds 5-0.
The Reds forwards were carrying well and Alex Dunlop, Ross Findlater and Gabe Wlyie were all making ground leaving the half backs, James Roulston and Gregor McLean, to control the ball well. From one such period of play a good ball from Gregor McLean sent inside centre Jeff Martin crashing over. 10-0 to the Reds.
The supporters of the Reds were delighted with the performance against this Currie side, who had only 7 players from the team that beat us narrowly in the away fixture as they have great strength and depth at Currie.
The same pattern of play continued for the rest of the game with Lockhart, Findlater and Herdman leading from the front with carries resulting in opportunities for tries. Gregor McLean scored again from a similar forward drive (15-0). Lewis Herdman, revelling in being allowed to play at wing forward, finished the scoring with another try. None of the tries were converted leaving the score 20-0 to the Reds, but it should have been more!
Great game and great result. Next week Heriots 2As at home. We need everyone available please for this clash with Heriots who currently sit top of the league with us in third.
