MBB Preview: Arkansas vs Michigan at Jimmy V Classic
Who: Arkansas Razorbacks (7-2, 0-0 SEC) vs #14/14 Michigan Wolverines (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten)
What: This will be the first time Arkansas has played in the Jimmy V Classic and the program’s first time in Madison Square Garden since 1997.
When: Tuesday – Dec. 10 – approx. 8:00 pm (CT) / 9 pm (CT) or 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1 (Tennessee vs Miami).

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas heads to New York City to play in the World’s Most Famous Arena – Madison Square Garden – to participate in the annual Jimmy V Classic. The Razorbacks will face #14 Michigan on Tuesday (Dec. 10). Tipoff is set for approximately 8 pm (CT)/9 pm (ET) – or 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1 of the Classic (Tennessee and Miami). Both games will be televised on ESPN.
After facing Michigan, Arkansas will make its annual trip to North Little Rock’s Simmons Bank Arena to host UCA on Saturday (Dec. 14). Tipoff is set for 3 pm (CT) and the game will be broadcast on SEDC Network Plus.
NOTES:
- Arkansas and Michigan have met on seven previous occasions with the Wolverines holding a slight 4-3 advantage in the series. Both teams are 2-0 when playing at home in the series. Michigan is 2-1 against the Razorbacks in neutral site games.
- One of the seven meetings came at Madison Square Garden in semifinals of the 1997 NIT Final Four. Michigan advanced to the final with a 77-62 win. Maurice Taylor led UM with 19 points as he was 1 of 4 Wolverines in double figures. NYC native Kareem Reid led Arkansas with 19 points. Statistically, Arkansas won two key categories. It out-rebounded UM, 43-38, and had just 13 turnovers compared to 25 for UM. However, Michigan shot 45.8% from the field and Arkansas was just 23.9%.
- The last time Arkansas and Michigan played, the Wolverines won 80-67 on Dec. 8, 2012 in Ann Arbor. Glenn Robinson III led UM with 17 points and Trey Burke added 16 as each of the starting five scored in double figures. Marshawn Powell led Arkansas with 18 points.
- For the first time since its inception (1995-96), Arkansas will play in the Jimmy V Classic.
- A Calipari-coached team has played in the Jimmy V Classic three previous times (once at UMass and twic e at Memphis). His teams are 2-1 in the Classic.
- Arkansas has made two previous trips to the fourth and current version of World’s Most Famous Arena — Madison Square Garden — and played six times in the third version from 1943-48. The Hogs are 3-7 all-time at “MSG.”
- However, Coach Calipari has made 27 previous appearances in Madison Square Garden and is 15-12 all-time in the venue.
