Mangione family in Maryland: What we know

BALTIMORE, Md. (WDCW) – Although many people outside of Maryland came to know the "Mangione" name only after the arrest of Luigi Mangione, 26, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the family has a number of prominent ties to the state where he grew up.

The Mangione family has several business interests — chief among them, Turf Valley Resort and Hayfields Country Club.

Located in Ellicott City, Md., Turf Valley is home to a hotel, golf courses, spa, and more. According to the resort’s website, Nick and Mary Mangione purchased the property in 1978, years after a clubhouse was built there and it opened as Turf Valley Country Club.

Peter Mangione lists himself as the current general manager of the resort online, noting that he began his career there after graduating from college.

Peter Mangione also says he is the executive director of the family's Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Md. Hayfields' website says the property "overlooking the spectacular views of Oregon Ridge" gives members "exclusive access to an elite golf course, practice facilities, recreational activities, and casual dining."

The Mangiones also founded Lorien Health Services, which has nine locations. The company describes itself as "Not a Traditional Nursing Home Since 1977." Lorien's facilities can be found in Baltimore, Howard, Harford, and Carroll counties.

The Mangione name is a familiar one in Maryland politics. Nino Mangione, cousin of Luigi, is a state delegate, who, as of December, was a Republican candidate for Baltimore County Council.

Nino Mangione wrote on Facebook Tuesday, Dec. 10 that he was postponing a fundraising event at Hayfields on Dec. 12 because "of the nature of this terrible situation" involving his cousin.

On Tuesday, Mangione's defense lawyer Thomas Dickey informed a Pennsylvania court that his client will not waive extradition to New York where he faces a murder charge, but instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail after prosecutors said he was too dangerous to be released.
