Blumenauer signs off from US House of Representatives

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Earl Blumenauer, who represented Oregon's 3rd Congressional District for 28 years, suggested in his final speech on the floor of the US House of Representatives that those in the new Congress should focus on things that bring people together instead of dividing us.

The speech, which lasted a little less than 5 minutes, provided Blumenauer with a final platform to note the accomplishments for which he's proud -- and included a reference to improving bicycle culture throughout the country.

Once his current term is complete in the next few weeks, his seat will be taken by Democrat Maxine Dexter.

In January, Blumenauer will step into a new role as a staff member at Portland State University.
