Girl passes away after falling through ice on Washington Park Lake
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A second child has died after falling through the ice of Washington Park Lake. Police announced the girl's death Tuesday evening.
Two children were pulled from the lake on Saturday. Police said a 12-year-old boy tried walking across the lake toward the lake house when he fell through the ice. An 11-year-old girl saw him fall through the ice and attempted to save him but also went into the water.
Albany firefighters rescued the girl before the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team recovered the boy’s body from the lake. The girl was taken to Albany Medical Center in critical condition. She has since passed away.
Both children were students at North Albany Middle School. The City School District of Albany has provided a crisis team of district personnel and mental health providers. In addition to the on-site crisis team, the district has a crisis text line you can use by texting "home" to 741-741 to connect to a free counselor, 24/7.
