Report: Juan Soto Press Conference May Happen Thursday
It is happening. The Mets have tentatively scheduled the introductory news conference for Juan Soto for Thursday at 3 p.m. ET at Citi Field, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Soto, 26, agreed to a 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets on Sunday night, the largest contract in sports history by total value. He is the highest paid player in baseball, surpassing the 10-year, $700 million deal Shohei Ohtani signed with the Dodgers. The $51 million average annual value is an MLB record.
Soto slashed .288/.419/.569 for the Yankees this year with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs. He had 31 doubles, four triples and seven steals. He led the American League with 128 runs scored and walked 129 times. In the 2024 playoffs, he went 16-for-49 with four home runs and 1.101 OPS.
If the tentative news conference happens, it will join other “memorable” Mets moments that occurred on Dec. 12:
- 2011 – The Mets claimed future pitching coach Jeremy Hefner off waivers.
- 1997 – The Mets traded Alex Ochoa, who once hit for the cycle, to the Twins for Rich Becker.
- 1975 – The Mets traded Rusty Staub and Bill Laxton to the Tigers for Mickey Lolich and Billy Baldwin.
