German police arrest three extremists plotting Christmas market attack

German authorities announced on Tuesday that three “Islamist extremists” had been arrested on charges of preparing a “serious act of violence.”

The police stated that the individuals had planned to target a Christmas market, and weapons, including a gun and a knife, were seized from them.

The Guardian reported that on Sunday, December 8, two Lebanese brothers, aged 15 and 20, were arrested in the city of Mannheim. Authorities confirmed that the brothers held a “strong religious ideology” and had deep sympathy for the ISIS group, having made specific preparations for the attack.

Additionally, on Sunday, German police arrested a 22-year-old man of Turkish descent in the Hektanus area of Hesse. Police said they found an assault rifle, ammunition, and several knives at his residence.

According to The Guardian, quoting German media, these three individuals intended to carry out attacks on Christmas markets in Mannheim and Frankfurt.

The recent arrests highlight growing concerns over extremist threats in Germany, particularly during the holiday season. Authorities are intensifying efforts to prevent potential attacks and ensure public safety, especially at high-risk locations such as Christmas markets.

In August of this year, three people were killed, and eight others injured, in a knife attack at a street festival in Solingen, Germany.

As a result of these attacks, Germany has implemented stricter laws and regulations concerning migrants. These incidents have negatively affected the process of accepting and integrating migrants, especially Afghan migrants, into German society.

The government’s focus remains on reducing the impact of such attacks on migrant integration and maintaining national security.
