Red Sox, Yankees Reportedly Battling For Another Top Free Agent

The Red Sox and Yankees are destined to do this thing forever, huh?

Boston and New York reportedly are among “those in the mix” for free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Houston and Detroit were also named as possible suitors.

Bregman has been closely tied to both the Red Sox and Yankees, with the former reportedly being split on whether or not it actually wanted to acquire him. Boston isn’t the most natural fit, though the 30-year-old is reportedly open to playing second base — which has been a black hole at Fenway Park for nearly half a decade. New York, on the other hand, has a gaping hole near the top of its lineup after Juan Soto went across town to cash $765 million worth of checks for the next 15 seasons.

Bregman is coming off three seasons in which he combined to slash .260/.349/.449 with 74 home runs, 96 doubles and 266 RBIs, all more than respectable numbers while playing some of the best third base of anyone in baseball.

The Red Sox need a right-handed bat to balance their lineup, though some other options might come with better value. The Yankees need to add to the top of their order after losing their best player. Who will come out on top?
