Talented Tottenham defender has ‘terrible’ positional sense – Pundit claims
Craig Burley was shocked by the kind of positions that one Tottenham man was taking up while defending in the second half against Chelsea.
Tottenham’s full-backs have a tough job
Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie have not been at their best this season, with neither player managing to maintain the standard of performance they delivered last campaign.
However, it is not easy being a full-back in Ange Postecoglou‘s system, with both players not only needing to get up and down the pitch with intensity all game but also needing to occupy central areas at times during the build-up.
Craig Burley not impressed with Destiny Udogie
Burley was extremely critical of the positions that Udogie took up while the Blues were pouring down their right in the second period.
While the pundit admitted that he is a fan of the Italian, he insisted that the 22-year-old’s positional sense needs a lot of improvement.
Burley told ESPN FC: “I was watching Destiny Udogie during the second half and half the time he was in a position that was neither left back nor left midfield. It was kind of in between and I am thinking, ‘Where is he? Where is his game awareness?’
“It was so easy for Chelsea to get down that right-hand side, but he is not the only one. I think he is a very, very good player, but his positional sense as a full-back at times is just terrible.”
Tottenham’s defensive organisation leaves a lot to be desired
There is no doubt that Spurs are often exposed defensively as soon as their second line of the press is beaten, with the midfielders failing to fill the gaps in front of the backline.
The way Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr lazily strolled back when Jadon Sancho was easing his way into shooting range was a prime example.
