‘I was hurt when Antonio Conte was sacked’ – Former Spurs player reveals
One former Tottenham defender has spoken about his experience working under Antonio Conte and how he felt when the club made the decision to part ways with the Italian.
Injuries prevented wing-back from fulfilling his potential
Ryan Sessegnon arrived at Tottenham with a huge reputation back in 2019 and when the youngster finally started playing regularly under Antonio Conte, many expected him to kick on and fulfil his potential.
The Englishman was the ideal Conte wing-back, being strong defensively in one vs one, having the engine to get up and down the pitch and the strength to win duals.
However, injuries prevented the Englishman from being a hit at Tottenham, with the wide-man eventually leaving after his contract ran down last summer and returning to Fulham on a free transfer.
Ryan Sessegnon on Antonio Conte
Sessegnon made just 38 appearances for Spurs over five years and the overwhelming majority of those came in Antonio Conte’s 15 months in charge.
The Fulham man understandably enjoyed working under the 55-year-old, admitting that he learned a lot from the experienced coach.
Sessegnon told Rising Ballers: “Then Antonio Conte came in, he was intense, but in a good way, he was a very good coach. I loved him to be honest with you, a very good coach, honest, and he helped me a lot. He made us run, but, tactically, one of the best coaches I’ve ever worked under.”
When asked how he felt when Conte was sacked, the former Tottenham man responded: “It hurt me a little bit, the relationship I and Conte had was good. But they made their decision to get rid of him, and we just had to get on with it I guess.”
One of the few disappointed by Conte’s departure
One can understand why Sessegonon as a wing-back enjoyed working under Conte, but it is fair to say that he was one of the only few players at the club who was sad to see the Italian go.
Towards the final few months of Conte’s time at Tottenham, his tactics had been found out by other Premier League managers, and he had evidently lost the dressing room.
