Police know how a homeless man died in east Topeka crash
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Topeka Police Department (TPD) knows how a homeless man died in a vehicle and pedestrian crash in November.
According to TPD records, Emmett Leatherwood, 72, of Topeka, was walking east across the street in the 1900 block of Southeast Adams Street without a crosswalk, when a woman was driving south on the same road. The vehicle hit Leatherwood, then drove west on Southeast Adams Street until it hit a curb and came to a stop.
According to police records, the driver of the vehicle was not impaired. Alcohol contributed to Leatherman's state at the time of the crash. Topeka police say Leatherwood was homeless at the time of the crash.
Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, Topeka Police responded to a reported injury crash involving a car and pedestrian near the 1900 block of Southeast Adams Street. According to a news release, a male, later identified as Leatherwood, was transported to a local hospital, and was later pronounced dead.
