Bill to put more AEDs in schools heads to president's desk

BUFFALO, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A bipartisan bill that was pushed by Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin has passed both chambers of Congress. The Cardiomyopathy Health Education, Awareness, Research and Training in Schools (HEARTS) Act now heads to the president for a signature.

The HEARTS Act will put more AEDs in schools across the U.S. and make CPR and AED training more accessible.

Hamlin has been advocating for the bill after he suffered a cardiac emergency during an NFL game in January 2023. The Bills' medical team used an AED and performed CPR, which saved Hamlin's life.

According to Sen. Chuck Schumer's office, in schools with AEDs, children who experience cardiac arrest are seven times as likely to survive as children in schools without AEDs.
