New Delhi: India’s D Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren in the 14th round to secure the 2024 World Chess Championship title in Singapore on Thursday. With this, the 18-year-old Gukesh became the youngest world chess champion, beating the record previously held by Garry Kasparov.

The Indian Grand Master started the tournament at a disadvantage after losing the first round. However, Gukesh recovered quickly and equalized the match in the third round. Gukesh took the lead in 11th round, only to lose the next game as Ding struck back. Gukesh qualified for the World Championship after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.

Gukhesh’s performance coach was very proud of him and he made good remarks over his win, Paddy Upton (Gukesh’s performance coach, Leadership coach, practical speaker, mental game coach, and university professor.): “I have flown in to support Gukesh in the final two games. We haven’t discussed anything special for this decisive game – he has a plan for the fourteen games, and he will stick to it.”
