Former Top Red Sox Prospect Reacts To Garrett Crochet Trade

It was an exciting day for the Red Sox on Wednesday and an interesting one of their former top prospects.

Boston acquired Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox for four high-end prospects. One of the young talents in the deal was Braden Montgomery, who the Red Sox selected 12th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.

The 21-year-old finished his college career at Texas A&M last summer, so he never had a chance to play in Boston’s organization. That’s why it was a “whirlwind of emotions” for Montgomery when he found out he was part of the Crochet trade.

“I was at the cages like normal. I got hit up and was told a unique situation presented itself,” Montgomery said on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove” on Thursday. “The Red Sox were gonna make a move for Crochet, which is understandable obviously, guy’s really good. I’m just excited. I guess they got something going on. It’s obviously very early in my pro career. It’s weird to move like this.”

Sox Prospects ranked Montgomery No. 5 in Boston’s farm system, so there was a lot of potential for his career. However, the opportunity to acquire a “bonafide ace” was worth it for chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.

As for Montgomery, he’ll await his next steps as he begins his pro career with the White Sox.
