Tottenham player ratings vs Rangers – Kulusevski rescues a point for Postecoglou

0

The curtain has been drawn over tonight’s Europa League football in Glasgow, with Spurs and Rangers sharing the points. An early second-half strike from Igamane was cancelled out by Kulusevski as the scoreline ended 1-1. Let’s take a look at the Tottenham player ratings from the clash against Rangers.

Ange Postecoglou returns to Scotland

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou returned to Scotland for the first time since leaving in the summer of 2023, as the former Celtic boss looked to get one over his previous arch-rivals at the Ibrox tonight. In eleven meetings prior to tonight, Ange won six times, most famously winning 4-0 in 2022 against The Gers.

Tonight, the Aussie named a rather strong eleven despite the packed festive schedule, although Radu Dragusin was partnered by the young Archie Gray, who is typically deployed as either a full-back or defensive midfielder by Postecoglou.

Injury setbacks for Romero and van de Ven, as well as a hamstring issue for Ben Davies, have left the Spurs boss with little choice.

Over the duration of the last ninety minutes, we’ve analysed each Tottenham player’s individual performance vs Rangers, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s see how they got on.

Tottenham player ratings vs Rangers

Fraser Forster: Spurs’ stand-in goalkeeper proved a worthy deputy once again as he made a number of important interventions, most notably the incredible denial of Dessers from close range, as he deflected a shot that looked destined for goal. 8.

Pedro Porro: Shocking. Just shocking from Porro once again as it was his awful positioning that led to Rangers’ opening goal. Too many times have Spurs conceded subject to Porro’s poor defensive work at the back-post, and the Spaniard is proving to be a liability for Postecoglou once again. He lost the ball too many times to keep count and was ineffective going forward. 2.

Radu Dragusin: Radu was pretty strong defensively when called upon, despite playing in a left centre-back role that he’s previously looked uncomfortable in. 5.

Archie Gray: The young Archie Gray had to battle hard in an unfamiliar position but the 18-year-old undoubtedly impressed. He made a number of strong challenges and was composed on the ball. 6.

Destiny Udogie: Udogie struggled to cope with Cerny on the left-hand side but the Italian was promising in advanced areas. Still, he was really lacking defensively although it must be said, the majority of the hosts’ chances developed from the opposite flank. 4.

Rodrigo Bentancur: Bentancur’s fitness issues were quite blatant as the Uruguayan definitely looked off the pace at times. Despite that, he was tidy on the ball and appeared to be one of Spurs’ better outfield players, particularly in the first-half. Surprisingly, he was substituted for Sarr on the hour mark. 5.5.

Yves Bissouma: Biss put in yet another subpar performance in the centre of midfield before being hooked on the hour mark. The Mali international showed no signs of improvement on his recent performances and his poor form is an all too familiar feature of Spurs this season. 3.

James Maddison: Maddison was poor, and despite his attempts to be an instrumental figure in what would’ve been an important Spurs win, he came up short. He failed to create any real chances for the Spurs frontline who, in fairness, were rather idle for much of the match. Maddison himself was also guilty of being rather non-existent for Spurs tonight, which was a common theme amongst the senior players out on the pitch. 3.

Brennan Johnson: Brennan had a handful of chances that he failed to convert, most notably a shot from point-blank range which he fired into the keeper. It was a big chance but luckily, the offside flag spared his blushes. In the second period, he tried to wrap a pass that was rolling across the box into the far corner, but he was unsuccessful. The Welshman was later subbed on the hour mark for Solanke. 4.5.

Heung-min Son: The Spurs captain faltered tonight. He was non-existent in the centre-forward position, lacking any sort of presence in the box and with his back to goal. Later, when he was moved to the left flank, he was just as ineffective. There was an evident lack of leadership from the South Korean tonight, and it isn’t the first time he’s looked short of ideas this season. 3.5.

Timo Werner: After a let-down of a first-half display. Timo was subbed at half-time. The German was poor and ineffective on the ball, so it was no surprise to see his name come up in red on the substitution board. 2.

Substitutes:

Pape Sarr: Sarr replaced Bentancur on the hour mark and he sured up the Tottenham midfield as he played in a double-pivot with Bergvall. 5.

Lucas Bergvall: The young Swede was given another chance to impress by the Spurs box as he replaced Bissouma on the hour mark. He certainly impressed with his tidy passes and intent to win the ball back, and continued to show positive signs to give Spurs fans some hope for his future at Spurs. 6.

Dejan Kulusevski: Deki came on in place of Werner at half-time and found himself on the right flank that he is so familiar with. The Swede levelled for Spurs at an important time with a sweeping strike across the goal to salvage a point. 7.

Dominic Solanke: Spurs’ talisman replaced Brennan Johnson on sixty minutes and he played an important role in Spurs’ equaliser. The Englishman had a few chances himself to be the difference but failed to convert any of them. 6.
