Researchers from the University of Concepción in Chile and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the US have discovered Dulcibella camanchaca, a new predatory amphipod species, in the Atacama Trench. Found at a depth of 7,902 meters, this amphipod represents a newly identified genus, highlighting the trench as a biodiversity hotspot. The discovery underscores the importance of deep-sea exploration to uncover unique ecosystems, understand marine food webs, and protect these fragile environments from human and climate-related threats.
