Stanley recalls 2,600,000 viral cups after dozens of people burned

Stanley tumblers have gone from the most in demand cups to sip beverages from on the go or even at home, to being recalled by the millions.

The Seattle-based brand voluntarily recalled 2.6million of its Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs on Thursday after receiving 91 reports worldwide of the lids detaching, including 16 cases in the US.

In total, there have been 38 burn injuries including two in the US, and 11 consumers around the globe had to seek medical attention.

‘These mug’s lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,’ stated an advisory from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Stanley cups became a social media sensation earlier this year as consumers sought the mugs in different candy-like colors and transformed them into an accessory used for more than keeping beverages hot or cold for lengthy periods of time.

The double-walled mugs became so popular that some designs quickly sold out, despite the 40-ounce size starting price at a hefty $45.

But the brand was not immune to manufacturing mishaps in China.

The items under recall are the 12, 16 and 20 ounce mugs with polypropylene lids. They came in colors include white, black and green and have the Stanley logo on the front and bottom of the cup.

They were sold on Amazon and at retailers including Target, Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods from June 2016 to this month for $20 to $50, depending on the model.

‘We ask that all customers in possession of either product immediately stop use and reach out to Stanley 1913 for a free replacement lid,’ wrote the company on Facebook on Thursday.

‘At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life.’

The Stanley recall comes nearly nine months after nearly half a million ceramic mugs made by Nestlé USA and sold at Starbucks with the coffee brand’s logo were recalled after customers suffered burns and cuts.
