COXSACKIE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- On Thursday around 7:15 p.m., a Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) power line contractor Kiewit struck the sewer main at the viaduct on Mansion Street. Repairs are ongoing Friday afternoon, as sewage discharge continues.

CHPE, is a 339-mile underground and underwater high-voltage electric line expected to deliver up to 1,250 megawatts of hydroelectric power from Québec to New York City. Work has been ongoing in the village for a few weeks.

According to an alert sent from the state, the discharge has affected the Coxsackie Creek and the volume of discharge has increased to 972,000 gallons. When the initial report went out Thursday, there was an unknown volume.

The village said the sewer line pipe that was broke was found to be 22 feet deep and was deeper than the equipment that was available last night. The line runs from the pump station in West Coxsackie to Church Corners.

Emergency repair crews have been onsite trying to repair the pipe. The village closed Mansion Street at the viaduct and remained closed Friday.
