LSU AgCenter predicts good crawfish season

LOUISIANA, La. (KLFY) -- Crawfish farmers and fishermen had a tough season in 2024. Mark Shirley with the LSU AgCenter said crawfish lovers should not worry because this next harvest looks to get back to normal.
"Now over the last couple of months, some of those crawfish have come out of their burrows with lots of baby crawfish, so it looks like we have good young of the year crop of crawfish coming up for the season," Shirley said.
The 2023 drought caused a major setback in last season's crawfish harvest. Many farmers were unable to get a good enough supply to make a normal profit.
"Those farmers didn't produce crawfish until more into April and May. So, it was very late. They didn't have hardly any crawfish during the winter," Shirley said.
The recent rains allowed the upcoming harvest to trend in the direction crawfish lovers have been hoping for, as some of the boiling places are now opening up and people can start planning their crawfish boil in March, April, and May.
