VIDEO: Vancouver Police release footage of fatal officer-involved shooting outside of a Safeway
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — On Friday, the Vancouver Police Department released footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at a Vancouver Safeway at 13719 Mill Plain Blvd. on Dec. 4.
In the video, Vancouver Police Department officers Kyle Beguelin Flores and Seth Anderson approach 45-year-old Adam Gunderson of Vancouver, who was spotted loading items from the grocery store’s dumpster into the back of a pickup truck at approximately 10:48 p.m., police say.
Gunderson allegedly refused to answer the officers' questions, and when Officer Anderson walked behind the truck to record its license plate, Gunderson entered the truck and shut the door, the video shows. Officer Flores was familiar with Gunderson, who had multiple warrants for his arrest, according to police. The officers attempted to make an arrest and a struggle ensued.
While struggling to bring Gunderson into custody, the officers allegedly noticed he was holding a gun, police said. After several warnings from officers to drop the weapon, Flores fired six bullets at Gunderson, the video shows.
“During the struggle, a gun was seen in his hands,” the Vancouver Police Department stated in the released video of the shooting. “He refused commands to drop the gun. While attempting to gain control of the male, he displayed a gun, and Vancouver Police Officer Kyle Beguelin Flores fired his duty weapon at the male.”
Emergency medical treatment was given to Gunderson, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Officer Flores suffered a broken hand, and a bite wound during the attempted arrest, and also received medical treatment.
Flores and Anderson were both placed on leave following the shooting.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations.
