Long Island residents warned of scam donation bins this holiday season
LONG ISLAND (PIX11)—Some unknown scammers are trying to profit from Long Island residents' generosity by placing fake donation bins at several locations this holiday season.
"These bins are a scam," said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. "We do not want these in our town. They don't belong here, and they're taking advantage of our people."
The scammers will set out fake bins in various locations. After unsuspecting New Yorkers have donated items, the scammers return and take the items, police say.
Residents are urged to report any bin they think is not legitimate to the police.
