Queen’s Park 3 Aberdeen 1

A brace by Sam Maclachlan and a superb solo goal by Leo Clark, late in the game, beat last season's finalists, Aberdeen, and ensured the wee Spiders progressed to the fifth round of Scottish Youth Cup this afternoon at Lochinch.

After the cold and fog of the past few days, it was delightful to see some winter sunshine breaking though the clouds at Lochinch for this re-arranged Scottish Youth Cup tie.

Aberdeen started the game with intent and put the young Spiders under pressure from the start.

Five minutes into the game Milosz Sliwinski had to look lively to gather the ball under pressure from the Dons forwards.

Two minutes later Queen’s opened the scoring.  Godspower Oguama had a shot from 16 yards out which took a deflection and came back off the bar.  Sam Mclachlan was waiting to head the ball into the empty net.

The young Spiders took a lot of confidence from that goal and began to test the Aberdeen defence with both Connor Falls and Godspower Oguama going close in the next ten minutes.

In the 25th minute Sam Mclaughlan and Connor Falls combined well to get Connor into a shooting position but he was closed down by the Dons defence before he could get his shot away.

In the 35th minute Milosz Sliwinski pulled off a superb double save to prevent the equaliser.

The Dons really pushed to get the equaliser right from the kick off.

In the 53rd minute a fast break down the right for the Dons saw the ball switched across to Joseph Teasdale on the left. The Aberdeen winger controlled the ball and had a shot on goal, which luckily for the Spiders, missed the target.

Two minutes later Queen’s doubled their lead. Sam Mclauchlan stepped on to a pass from Matthew Murray-Smith, just inside the Dons box, evaded a sliding tackle, and had a shot, which slipped through the hands of Dons keeper Rodrigo Vitols into the net for Sam’s and Queen’s second goal.

In the 63rd minute Aberdeen pulled a goal back when substitute Tristan Stephen pulled a goal back for the visitors just two minutes after coming on. A pass out of the Queen’s defence was intercepted by Ellis Clark. Clark then picked out Stephen who swivelled and hit a low shot into the far corner of the net.

The Dons continued to press for an equalising goal and were unlucky in the  71st minute when Fraser Mackie was picked out by Ellis Clark, just inside the Queen’s box, with the striker’s shot flashing inches past the post.

Just when the Dons were putting Queen’s under a lot of pressure, in the 74th minute, Leo Clark scored a goal which should be a contender for the goal of the season. Leo picked the ball up just outside the Aberdeen box, skipped past three defenders and lifted the ball over the Rodrigo Vitol and into the net for a truly outstanding finish.

Aberdeen tried their best to get back into the game but the resolute young Spiders held firm to win the game and progress to the next round where they will play St Mirren.

Head coach Charley King commented: “I am delighted for the group to get the victory which I felt was deserved overall. We made it hard for ourselves after taking the lead missing some great chances to make it more comfortable

“In the second half we had to dig in at times which is to be expected against a good team but we managed to see the game out pretty well in the end

“It’s a good achievement for the boys to get into the last 8 of the youth cup. People from the outside might look at this as a surprise result but the boys have been excellent over the last few months. They need to make sure they kick on from here to still improve daily. This isn’t a surprise to us and was well earned which is the mentality we are trying to create. “
