Used Trucks: Eye For A Bargain

In the current issue of Transport News, Steve Banner looks at the used truck market.

It has been under significant pressure, with dealers being cagey about what they retail and price tags being slashed repeatedly to get stock off the forecourt and into the fleets of operators.

This is driven by there being more older stock on the forecourt and fewer late year models, coupled with a rewriting of what constitutes ‘high mileage’ and acceptable annual mileage.

Hauliers have repeatedly told Transport News they are baulking at paying through the nose for new chassis, or if they are buying, downsizing the spec to meet the capital expenditure budget.

Mend and make do, seems to have been the 2024 mantra, especially as lending rates haven’t helped much either.

However, there are signs that used truck prices are beginning to bottom out with several used truck dealers suggesting the market should strengthen through 2025.
