Tottenham first-half player ratings vs Southampton – Five goals with no reply

The first forty-five minutes of a mutually important contest on the South Coast between Tottenham and Southampton has come to an end, and it’s time for player ratings, as the Lilywhites hold all the cards at the halfway mark.

Over the duration of the first-half, we’ve examined each Tottenham player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s take a look at how they got on.

Fraser Forster: Returning to St. Mary’s, Forster was hardly troubled. He’ll be hoping for more of the same in the second half. 7.

Djed Spence: Spence started a Spurs game for the first time since signing in the summer of 2022, and it took him less than a minute to make an impact as it was his dazzling run and deft through ball that sent Maddison through for the opening goal. Djed enjoyed plenty of the ball when overlapping on the right flank and later on the left. 8.

Archie Gray: Archie is looking more and more a home in his centre-half role, showing composure and calm on the ball. He’s pretty decent defensively too. 7.

Radu Dragusin: Radu did everything that was asked of him, and apart from letting Armstrong run free in the middle once or twice, he was solid. 7.

Destiny Udogie: Destiny started brightly, winning the ball back deep in Spurs territory and bombing forward, acting as the catalyst for Spurs’ fourth goal. Obviously, though, something had to go wrong for Spurs and worryingly, Udogie was subbed off with an issue just before the half-hour mark. N/A.

Pape Sarr: Operating in a double pivot alongside Bergvall, Sarr was energetic in the opening twenty-five minutes before turning into prime Messi, dancing through the Saints defence and slamming home Spurs’ fourth. Sarr was lively throughout the half too. 8.5.

Lucas Bergvall: It’s a first Premier League start for the young Swede, and it was a promising showing from him. He was mostly quiet, keeping it clean and tidy with his passing and he rarely lost authority of the ball. 7.5.

James Maddison: Maddison’s attacking instincts paid dividends throughout the half as it was his darting run through the Saints’ defensive line that allowed him to fire the ball across McCarthy and into the back of the net. Minutes later, his cross was flicked on into the path of Son, who made it 2-0. Just before half-time, Maddison showed immense composure to squeeze a shot into the top corner from the tightest of angles. Madders will be more than delighted with his first-half contributions. 10.

Dejan Kulusevski: Kulusevski was alive in the box to pounce on a loose ball, adding Spurs’ third goal inside fifteen minutes. Spurs’ maestro was relentless with his running, battling for the ball and creating chances. He was certainly bright out on that right side, combining well with Spence and Porro. 8.

Dominic Solanke: Dom will be disappointed not to get his own name on the scoresheet in that first-half, but his only real chance was blocked before it fell straight to Deki, who fired home. He was rather quiet in all honesty. 6.5.

Heung-Min Son: After Maddison’s cross was flicked on by a Saints defender, it fell kindly to Sonny who fired home, slotting the ball under the opposition keeper. The Tottenham captain was a threat down the left flank constantly, creating chances and tormenting Walker-Peters. Sonny himself could’ve had two or three in that first half. Sonny has now scored six and assisted another six this season (TransferMarkt). 9.

Pedro Porro: Porro replaced Udogie, who came off with an injury. N/A.
