Fold Stool
Fold Stool is a minimal stool created by North Carolina-based designer Vivian Chen. Its angular surfaces create a dynamic visual experience, where subtle shifts in orientation produce variations in brightness and shadow. Though crafted from a single material, the stool’s facets interact with light differently throughout the day, offering a sense of movement that contrasts with its otherwise static nature. This design exercise balances consistency with transformation, encouraging users to observe how light can alter a simple structure. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, the stool’s angular planes also serve a practical purpose. Its faceted mortise-and-tenon joinery extends through the seat, seamlessly connecting the legs and top. This construction technique reinforces the stool’s structural integrity while preserving its clean, geometric silhouette.
