Gavin And Stacey fans point out huge plothole in original series – saying ‘how do they have money to live?’
GAVIN And Stacey fans have pointed out a huge plothole in the original series – saying ‘how do they have money to live?’
It’s been over a decade since it first graced our screens, but fans of the BBC sitcom are still poring over every detail.
With the festive season in tow, many are rewatching the series in preparation for the highly-anticipated Christmas special – and uncovering a few mysteries along the way.
One of the most recent discussions, sparked on a Reddit forum, highlights a glaring question about how Gwen and Bryn West (played by Melanie Walters and Rob Brydon) financially support themselves.
One fan sharing their observations wrote: “I’ve been rewatching the show as preparation for Xmas day!
“But something I’ve picked up since rewatching is that Gwen and Brynn seem to never talk about or be employed?.
“How are they affording to live, in season 1 episode 3 Brynn says how Gwen’s late husband left her a penniless widow so obviously she won’t be living off any inheritance.
“Both have pretty standard houses and don’t seem the type to ask for rent from the people who lived there like Gavin, Stacey and Ness.
“There’s probably not a real answer to this but would love to hear peoples theories on these two characters employment statuses.”
The post quickly gained traction, with fans chiming in to share their own theories.
One proposed: “My theory was that Gwen was living off her dead husband’s pension. I have no evidence for this.”
Another added: “They do kind of dodge around that when Stacey and Gavin got married too and Pam and Mick had to pay. Hmmm.”
In a more humorous take, someone suggested: “Organised crime. Brynn is the Don of the Barry Island mafia.”
Some fans recalled hints about Bryn’s income during the show, with one noting: “At one point Bryn is explaining how he makes 200-ish a week to Mick ? *I can’t remember how.
“Edit: I think that whole street also buys/ sells stock; there’s thing about Nessa, Gwen and Doris, buying shares / waiting for the Tokyo stock market to open.
“So maybe they’re living off that too.”
Another fan offered a more practical explanation, writing: “I assumed they were both retired, owned their homes, and lived off pensions. We never discuss their ages but could have early retirement.”
Gavin and Stacey captured hearts across the UK when it first hit screens back in 2007.
Running for three series, it followed the romantic story of Stacey (played by Joanna Page) and Gavin (portrayed by Matthew Horne), and their relatives and friends.
Gavin and Stacey's Best Moments
With the news that the show is set to make an exciting return to screens, let's take a look at some of the comedy programme's biggest and best moments...
- Smithy and Rudi’s American Boy rap – No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith rapped perfectly word for word the Kanye West and Estelle hit American Boy as they walked across the car park on the phone to Gavin.
- Pam’s Vegetarian faux pas – Despite loving a cheesburger, Pam found herself caught up in a web of unexpected lies when she claimed to be Vegetarian. She is forced to keep up the secret throughout the entire show and uses hubby Mick to help her scoff meat. She is later rumbled when Stacey catches her in the act as she scoffs ham in the kitchen. Stacey says to her: “Is that ham, Pam!?… “I’ve seen you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, putting those regular sausages into the Linda McCartney box”.
- THAT fishing trip – It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history as to just exactly what did happen on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn appears to be hiding a secret as to an occurance between him and his nephew Jason which has left relations fractures. Ness’ on-off boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person to know the whole truth. Bryn did appear to allude to him and Jason lying together naked to keep warm as he said to Dave: “We’re going to have this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened, David, but you don’t know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you are that cold…”
- Islands in the Stream – No one can ever forget the classic Karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the track in front of all their nearest and dearest. It saw the whole pub burst into some line-dancing as they enjoyed a boozy night out.
- The Xmas special proposal – In 2019, fans were left overjoyed when the show made a comeback but it ended on the ultimate cliffhanger. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him as she finally laid bare her feelings for him. Fans were gutted as the show then cut straight to the credits as they never found out just how Smithy answered. Will all be revealed in the brand new episode?
Now, the hit BBC comedy show is making a return for one final episode this Christmas – and fans are in for a treat.
The hugely-anticipated show will be making a return on Christmas Day and will pick up from the cliffhanger ending of the 2019 special, which saw Nessa down on one knee for Smithy as she asked him to marry her.
The episode was the most-watched TV comedy show since Only Fools and Horses in 2002.
Fans were recently treated to a first look at the upcoming special in the Strictly Come Dancing finale over the weekend.
Ruth Jones as Nessa made an appearance during the Strictly final to read out the terms and conditions to viewers, whilst cracking a few iconic one liners.
Appearing on the BBC show, she was heckled by her iconic catchphrase “what’s occurring” as she bit back: “Oh, you don’t think I hear that every day?!”
- Gavin and Stacey is set to air on BBC One on Christmas Day.
