Shock moment car flies through the air & smashes into house after driver got behind wheel after boozy bottomless brunch

0

THIS is the shocking moment a drink-driver’s car flies through the air before slamming onto a driveway just inches from a family’s home.

Lindami Mremi, 22, had been boozing with pals at a “bottomless brunch” before getting behind the wheel of a friend’s Fiat Punto.

CCTV shows him hurtling along Robin’s Wood Road in Aspley, Nottingham, in the early hours of June 17 last year.

He lost control and mounted the kerb before smashing into a lamppost at such speed it was ripped out of the ground.

The impact flung the car 20ft into the air and narrowly missed smashing through the front of the house.

A roadside breath test showed Mremi had 81mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – more than twice the legal limit of 35mcg.

A blood sample also showed he had 131 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

He told officers he had been to a bottomless brunch but thought if he kept eating it would “absorb the alcohol” and he could drive home.

Mremi, of Bulwell, Nottingham, admitted drink driving, dangerous driving and a Bail Act offence.

He was handed a 24-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and a 12-month driving ban at Nottingham Crown Court.

He was also ordered to pay £1,800 compensation and complete up to 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Recorder Richard Davis told him: “You are very lucky you did not kill someone – either yourself, your passenger or an innocent bystander.

“You were driving at speed and you were impaired through consumption of alcohol.

“It’s very fortunate that no-one was hurt.

“Do not underestimate the seriousness of drinking and driving, particularly in this season of the year.

“You have an awful lot of growing up to do quickly.

“You have a kid on the way who you need to look after. You are clearly intelligent enough to run your own business.

“I am going to put this down as a complete misjudgment that can never happen again.”

The court heard that Mremi borrowed a friend’s car, insured himself and decided to drive home after the bottomless brunch – mistakenly thinking he was fit to drive and under the limit.

The crash caused £4,500 worth of damage.

Nottinghamshire Police have issued CCTV of the crash as part of its ‘A Deadly Mix’ campaign cracking down on drink and drug driving.

Detective Inspector Steven King said: “Drink or drug driving is completely unacceptable. Lives are destroyed by drink-driving.

“We hope by releasing the shocking footage in this case that people will think twice before deciding to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

“The next time they decide to do so could be their last.”
