The New York Times features 2 Oregon wines among 'most memorable' of 2024

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The New York Times released a list of the most memorable wines of 2024 -- and the list features two varieties from the Willamette Valley.

The list includes “12 younger more accessible bottles along with a couple of middle aged examples.”

The first, and youngest, wine on the list is Kelley Fox Wines' 2022 Dundee Hills Dux Vineyard Chardonnay.

“Ms. Fox tends to float under the radar compared with the more well-known Willamette producers,” the New York Times said. “She offers quirky, sometimes pointed opinions. Referring to her own wines, she said, ‘These are living things and quite inscrutable.’”

The outlet added, “I’ve found them lovely, precise and detailed, each well worth scrutinizing. This bottle riveted my attention in August with its beautiful texture and feeling of being alive in the glass.”

Kelley Fox Wines describes the chardonnay as “a serious wine with great purity," adding, "The nose is filled with soft minerals, subtle tropical fruits, and hint of flowers. There is a coolness and freshness that reminds me of smelling the air above a spring in the mountains.”

The second wine on the list is Bow & Arrow’s 2021 Willamette Valley Chenin Blanc.

The New York Times noted the wine “comes from a terrific producer, Bow & Arrow, which often departs from the usual Willamette narrative of pinot noir and chardonnay to make easy drinking, delicious wines from an assortment of grapes.”

“This bottle was deeply expressive, earthy and floral with that honeysuckle quality I often find in chenins. It suggests sweetness, but the wine was bone dry with a pleasing, weighty texture,” the New York Times said.

Other wines making the most memorable list includes Domaine de Cassiopée’s Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Les Côtés 2020 from Burgundy, France; Kakheti Saperavi 2019 from Pheasant’s Tears in the country of Georgia, along with Matt Taylor’s West Sonoma Coast Komorebu Vineyard Chardonnay 2017.
