Is Ange Postecoglou in danger of losing his job?

Postecoglou is a man under pressure at the moment and his position at Tottenham might become untenable if the Lilywhites do not show improvements over the coming weeks and months.

Of course, the 5-0 win over Southampton will do wonders for Tottenham’s confidence, but the Lilywhites have struggled for consistency this season and have a huge festive period ahead of them.

As things stand, reports indicate that the Australian has the support of the Spurs hierarchy, who are willing to back him in the January window and give him the tools he needs to succeed.

However, it has now emerged that one of the Premier League‘s longest-serving managers has his eye on the Tottenham job.

Thomas Frank could snub West Ham and wait for Spurs

This report comes from TEAMtalk, who say that West Ham are eyeing Thomas Frank as a potential replacement for Julen Lopetegui.

It is revealed that the Hammers have held discussions internally about making a move for the Brentford boss, but it is unclear at the moment if the Dane would be ready to move to the London Stadium.

Interestingly, it is explained that Tottenham previously had an interest in Frank and that he could potentially find himself in the frame for the N17 hot seat if the club parted ways with Postecoglou.

The outlet explains that Spurs admire Frank because of his ability to play good football, work on a budget, and build strong relationships with players.

The publication adds that a move to North London would interest the 51-year-old due to Tottenham’s size, their squad and the infrastructure in place at the club.

Why Thomas Frank might not be a good fit for Spurs

There is no doubt that Frank is a very good coach and that he has done an exceptional job at Brentford, getting them promoted and establishing themselves as a force in the Premier League.

However, there are question marks over whether his tactical approach has a high enough ceiling for him to manage the elite sides, which Spurs should aspire to be.

Frank is of a similar school of coaching to the likes of Unai Emery, and Nuno Espirito Santo. While that approach can get teams to around the 65-point range, there are major doubts as to whether it can get teams to the 80 and 90-point range, which is what teams need to compete at the top end of the Premier League table at the moment.

It is not a coincidence that the likes of Pep Guardiola, Ezno Marescha and Arne Slot all favour a possession-based approach, and that is the kind of coach Tottenham should be looking at.

One can argue that Postecoglou’s ceiling is higher than Frank’s (although the latter’s floor is probably higher), but if it does not work out for the Australian at Tottenham, the club should look towards managers such as Andoni Iraola.
