Tottenham receive verdict on Rodrigo Bentancur 7-game suspension appeal

The FA have now given their verdict on Tottenham’s appeal in relation to Rodrigo Bentancur’s recent seven-game suspension.

The FA’s independent regulatory commission hit Bentancur with a seven-match suspension last month and fined him £100,000 for the racially insensitive comment he made about Heung-min Son back in the summer.

Tottenham subsequently confirmed that while they accepted the verdict, they had decided to appeal the length of the Uruguayan’s ban.

It was reported that Spurs were hoping to get the ban reduced to six matches, which is the minimum punishment stipulated in the FA’s rules for offences of this nature. The North London club were also optimistic that their appeal would be successful.

However, the FA have now handed Tottenham a blow by dismissing the appeal on Bentancur‘s ban.

English football’s governing body said on their website: “An independent Regulatory Commission imposed a seven-match suspension on the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder for an aggravated breach of FA Rule E3 concerning a media interview.  

“This appeal was dismissed following a hearing, and the seven-match suspension remains as ordered by the Regulatory Commission. The Appeal Board’s written reasons for its decision will be published in due course.”

How many more matches will Bentancur be suspended for?

This means that Bentancur‘s initial seven-match ban will remain in place, with the suspension only applicable for domestic fixtures and not European ones.

The 27-year-old has already sat out five of his stipulated seven-match ban, which means that he will only be unavailable for two more games.

Bentancur will miss Tottenham’s upcoming EFL Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United and their Premier League clash against Liverpool before returning to action before returning to action against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
