JJJJound Is Bringing Gore-Tex and Leather to This Black New Balance 2002R
While the wait continues for the JJJJound x New Balance 993 previewed late in November, the two collaborators are dropping their third waterproofed take on the 2002R.
The JJJJound x New Balance 2002R Gore-Tex will release this week in a predominantly black colorway with new leather construction. While deviating from the suede used on the Gore-Tex sneakers from earlier this year, as well as another 2002R that went without Gore-Tex in 2023, JJJJound puts plush leather overlays atop the mesh base. The intent is to allow the 2002R to stand up to the conditions of winter, and whatever it’s subjected to will be obscured with black only forgone for a small “Storm Blue” nubuck panel at the collar matching the heel’s Abzorb units.
As is typical for the minimalist design studio, JJJJound branding is limited to the speed lace toggle, reflective mustache and insole — all of which beside the latter are applied tonally. A gusseted tongue also helps keep water at bay along with the Gore-Tex membrane.
The 2002R has been one of New Balance’s most popular model since it was reintroduced in 2020. The “R” denotes its update from the original 2002 released in 2010, which wasn’t a major hit at the time in part because of the $250 price tag created by its “Made in USA” construction. While the upper remains the same as the 2002, the sole unit from the 860v2 was swapped in, limiting the the Abzorb cushioning to the heel.
The JJJJound x New Balance 2002R Gore-Tex in “Black/Storm” will release Wednesday, December 18, on JJJJound’s website. An additional drop will follow Friday, December 20, through New Balance’s. Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but the two previous editions retailed for $190.
