NYPD brings holiday cheer to St. Mary's Hospital for Children

0

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- The NYPD brought holiday joy to young patients at St. Mary's Hospital for Children in Bayside, Queens on Tuesday. The annual tradition aims to create special memories for children facing complex medical challenges.

Yobani, a 28-year-old patient with cerebral palsy, smiled as he sang along with NYPD officers caroling during their visit. The event filled the hospital entrance with festive spirit, bringing happiness to patients like Yobani. When asked about his Christmas expectations, Yobani enthusiastically shared, "Open gifts with my family, have fun, enjoying Christmas," and hinted at his wish list by saying, "Maybe a new video game."

The NYPD's visit included various activities such as arts and crafts and interactions with NYPD horses. A special highlight of the day was the appearance of Santa Claus, who distributed presents to the children.

Sean Lally, executive vice president of St. Mary's, noted the significance of the event, stating, "Our Bayside facility has 124 medical complex children. And the police department brings a cast of hundreds from all sorts of units from all over the city."

Detective Terry Brienza of the NYPD explained that the initiative was started in 2013 to bring joy to children in the hospital who may not have the same opportunity to celebrate the holidays as others. He added, "St. Mary's holds on to these children until young adulthood and tries to rehabilitate to get them back out there."

This celebration is part of an annual tradition that showcases the commitment of St. Mary's to improving the lives of its young patients. As New York's largest provider of pediatric long-term and rehabilitative care, St. Mary's plays a crucial role in supporting children with complex medical needs in the region.

The visit not only brightens the spirits of children like Yobani but also provides a moment of normalcy and excitement during the holiday season.

St. Mary's is currently seeking donations to support their mission. For those interested in more information, click here.
