After a great showing at the guilds last week, followed by a surge in the Oscar odds, The Substance had a rough day Tuesday, only popping up in the makeup and hairstyling category, which was widely expected for its Monstro Elisasue prosthetics. It missed visual effects and sound — two vital components to the success of the Coralie Fargeat hit — as well as original score. This came on the heels of the film getting shut out of nominations from the AACTA International Awards, aka the Australian Oscars, earlier in the day. The Substance is obviously not out of it completely, but its underperformance here might make you want to temper expectations.
On the end, Emilia Pérez topped the shortlists with six mentions in five categories: double original song for “Mi Camino” and “El Mal,” international feature, makeup and hairstyling, original score, and sound. Despite the musical’s polarizing reception online, the film has always been embraced by the industry — and this showing is further proof of that. It could grab all six of these nominations to propel it to double-digit nominations when combined with above-the-line and non-shortlist categories.
