Man United very interested in signing £45m Portuguese star, same agent as Amorim - report
Manchester United have been hugely disappointing this season, and not even a mid-season change in the dugout has helped to rescue their campaign.
The Red Devils are still languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, sitting 13th in the table after picking up 22 points from 16 games.
For all their struggles, United are just six points off the top four, but they have yet to show they have what it takes to string a couple of wins together and push up the table.
Amorim’s arrival mid-season complicates the issue. The players now have to adapt to his highly demanding 3-4-3 system that uses double 10s behind the centre-forward.
Several players – not least club stalwart Marcus Rashford, who recently announced his intention to leave Old Trafford – are struggling to grasp the new manager’s methods.
There’s a need for United to reinforce their squad with fresh recruits that fit into Amorim’s system, and numerous players are on their radar.
Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes is the latest player linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that United are interested in the Portuguese star, who is valued at £45 million on Transfermarkt.
Mendes’ current deal with PSG is set to expire in 2026, and there has yet to be any talks about a contract extension.
United could leverage his contract situation to negotiate a favourable deal, but it is unclear if PSG will be willing to let go of their 22-year-old star.
The Red Devils have been short-staffed at left-back for the past two seasons, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling to shake off their recurring injury issues.
Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have deputised admirably in recent times, but Mendes will fit Amorim’s 3-4-3 set-up like a glove. He also has the same agent as Amorim, which works in United’s favour.
His injury record might be the only cause for worry, but he’s certainly the kind of talent United need to compete at the top level.
