Suspect in death of woman with special needs rejects plea deal
ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A suspect charged in the death of her adult daughter with special needs in Rotterdam has rejected a plea deal. Amber Geier appeared in court on Thursday.
Prosecutors had offered Geier a four to 12-year prison sentence in exchange for pleading guilty to second degree manslaughter, concealment of a human corpse and grand larceny. Geier rejected the deal and said she plans to hire a private attorney.
Geier was released from jail on bond last week.
She is charged in the death of 24-year-old Skylar Pettit. Pettit had diabetes and Down syndrome and depended on Geier for care.
Prosecutors said Geier stopped giving Pettit insulin, which caused her health to deteriorate. Geier's also accused of stealing $3,000 in disability benefits. Pettit was found at her home a few months after her death after the Mohonasen Central School District requested a welfare check.
