It’s been three years since his character, Steve Arnott, graced our screens in the hugely poplar BBC hit about a police anti-corruption unit known as AC-12.

Since the series left our screens, in May 2021, fans have eagerly been awaiting news on whether we’ll be seeing more of Martin and his co-star Vicky McClure, who plays Kate Flemming.

Keen to dig for information, radio host Chris didn’t miss an opportunity to ask Martin whether there was any news on a future comeback.

It’s a question the actor is used to fielding and he said: “I love that people ask and the love that people have. When people stop asking about it it’ll be a sad day.”

“I do love that but, you don’t want to give fans false hope because people get excited.”

Then in a blow to expectant viewers he continued: “We’re not planning anything immediately. We’d love to do another one at some point but we’re all working next year on other stuff.”

Chris cheekily mirrored many fan’s feelings with his reply: “Well stop working on other stuff, stop being so selfish.”

There was a little sliver of hope for lovers of the gritty drama though as Martin didn’t rule out a future series entirely.

He said “I’m hopeful and sure we’ll get to it at some point but honestly once we’re going to do it you’ll hear it from us first.

The show, which was originally filmed in Birmingham and moved production to Belfast, has been a phenomenal hit, picking up a string of awards and nominations over its six series.

The finale of the last series was watched by over 13 million viewers and saw the anti-corruption unit’s future in question as it faces a restructure.

Ever since, fans have been keen to find out it lead characters Kate and Steve can pull things together.

Whilst speaking on his Radio X show Chris asked about the constant speculation surrounding the future of the programme.

He said: “Does it become a pain if the three of you are in the same place at the same time and if you say oh we should meet for a coffee, does one of you go oh we can’t because if someone takes a picture they’ll be like oh they’re filming.”

Martin laughed and replied: “People are always great but it comes out in the papers the next day. I understand it, in some ways it’s a backwards compliment.

All six series of Line of Duty are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
