Timothée Chalamet’s next Oscar contender ‘Marty Supreme’ gets official 2025 date

Apparently it’s not Christmas without Chalamet. This year’s Timothée Chalamet Best Actor vehicle, A Complete Unknown, opens on Christmas Day. And on Friday, A24 announced that next year’s Timothée Chalamet Best Actor vehicle, ping pong period piece Marty Supreme, will open on Christmas Day next year, Deadline reports.

Marty Supreme is a sports drama inspired by, but not directly based on, the life of table tennis professional Marty Reisman, a New Yorker who was a world champion in the 1940s and 1950s and revolutionized the sport with his unique playing style. The film is directed by Josh Safdie in his solo debut (his brother Benny’s solo debut is another A24 sports drama coming in 2025, The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson as UFC fighter Mark Kerr, setting up a Safdie smackdown at the 2026 Oscars). The script is by the director and Ronald Bronstein.

The film’s eclectic, star-studded cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, Penn Jillette, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank), Abel Ferrera, and Sandra Bernard. The film is reportedly tied with The Smashing Machine as A24’s most expensive film to date, with a budget of $70 million. 

Paul Feig’s The Housemaid with Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried is also slated for Christmas Day 2025. However, the holiday box office will be dominated by James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which opens on Dec. 19, and to a lesser extent by a SpongeBob SquarePants movie that also opens Dec. 19.

Chalamet can currently be seen as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s biopic A Complete Unknown. Gold Derby predicts he will earn an Academy Award nomination for his performance.
