Jennifer Love Hewitt Shares Her Kids’ Reaction to One of Her Famous Films: ‘It’s Such a Surreal Moment’
Jennifer Love Hewitt recently introduced her kids to one of her iconic films, and they had the best reaction. She just opened up about what it was like to see one of her ‘90s movies with her kids Autumn, 11, and Atticus, 9, who she shares with husband Brian Hallisay, and it couldn’t have gone better.
The film in question? None other than the 1997 cult classic I Know What You Did Last Summer! Hewitt plays final girl Julie James in the film, which also stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe. Although the scary movie is rated R, Hewitt felt like her kids were ready to see it, as they are huge fans of the genre.
“They’re horror people, so they wanted to see it,” Hewitt recently told PEOPLE. “It was so crazy seeing myself at 18. I look so much like my daughter, it’s crazy.”
The trio went to a movie theater to watch the film, and the kids “loved it,” according to the proud mom. “They were like, ‘Mommy, this is so crazy. This is so cool.’ It was fun to go back and remember things that happened during that movie and share it with them. It’s such a surreal moment to sit with your kids and watch yourself as a kid,” Hewitt dished.
The Inheriting Magic author did not bring her 3-year-old son Aiden to the movie for obvious reasons, but he has seen his mom in the 2004 Garfield: The Movie, “which he likes,” she said.
Now that they’ve seen the original, Hewitt is excited to see the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot starring Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Jonah Hauer-King, and others, premiering in 2025. “My daughter wants me to be in [the reboot] so she can meet the young girls who are now starring in the movie, because she’s moved on from me,” Hewitt told the outlet. “I’m not the most exciting. She was like, ‘I want to meet the other girls.’ So yeah, I have to do it for my kids now.”
The 9-1-1 star is also in a new Lifetime movie called The Holiday Junkie, which Hewitt wrote, directed, and starred in. Her husband and their three kids all make a special cameo in the movie!
“Here’s the funny part, the two big kids are in the movie a couple of times, and then I realized on the last day of filming that we did not put the baby in the movie,” Hewitt said in a recent appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show. “I got this flash of him being 30, the movie running 125 times and him being in therapy saying, ‘My family left me out of the family Christmas movie.’ So I said, ‘we got him a work permit for it,’ and we threw him in the snow scene there for five seconds, and he was so happy.”
Last month, Hewitt told SheKnows a little bit about her family’s holiday traditions, which sound amazing. “They joke that they come home one day from school and they walk into Santa’s workshop, because I always try to decorate the big stuff while they’re away so that when they come in, it’s just like magic,” she told us.
“I have music playing, and I’m usually in some sort of elf outfit; they really look forward to that,” she continued. “We also do a Christmas Eve sleepover in our room, which is really fun and they look forward to that every year. I make them a big giant bed, they all cuddle up, and we watch a movie. It’s really lovely.”
