Elevated levels of lead found in some Albany homes

0

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The City of Albany Department of Water and Water Supply found elevated levels of lead in drinking water in some homes and buildings. The testing was done between July and December 2024.

Thirteen properties sampled above the Environmental Protection Agency's action level of 15 ppb. High levels of lead can be attributed to lead water service lines or interior lead plumbing.

The Albany Water Department has corrosion control to help create a barrier between the lead and drinking water in the lead service lines. They said it's possible that warmer water temperatures and continuously aging lead service lines could contribute to higher samples.

Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and children. To find resources to determine if your water service line is lead or to apply for a free water filter, visit the city of Albany's website.
