What to watch this weekend Dec. 20, 2024: TV awards contenders

0

If you’re looking to get Laid this weekend, Peacock’s newest series has you covered.

Adapted from an Australian series by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, who previously collaborated on the far too short-lived Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23, the acerbic romantic comedy stars Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as Ruby, a narcissistic event planner in her early 30s desperately seeking a real connection when she learns that her former lovers have all begun dying in unusual ways. This strange but shocking revelation quickly leads Ruby and her true crime-loving best friend AJ (a scene-stealing Zosia Mamet) down a twisty path as they attempt to figure out what’s going on, one that may or may not also lead Ruby on a journey of self-discovery. A quick and highly bingeable eight episodes, Laid is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more family friendly as we approach the holidays, other contenders include:

  • The 47th Annual Kennedy Center Honors: The complete opposite of Laid, this special is guaranteed to feature zero deaths and even fewer mentions of sex. Hosted by former honoree Queen Latifah, the annual celebration honors lifetime artistic achievement. This year’s recipients include Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, the legendary band Grateful Dead, Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt, and Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter and composer Arturo Sandoval. The Apollo, meanwhile, is being honored as a historic American institution. The prerecorded ceremony airs Sunday at 8:30/7:30c on CBS and will stream the next day on Paramount+.
  • What If…?: Not all of Marvel’s Disney+ shows are created equal, but this Emmy-winning animated series exploring the multiverse through alternate timelines and stories within the Marvel world remains a breath of fresh air. The eight new episodes that make up the show’s third and final season feature fan-favorite characters like Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), and the Red Guardian (David Harbour). The Season 3 premiere streams Sunday on Disney+, with new episodes arriving daily.
  • Aaron Rodgers: Enigma: As you can probably tell from its title, Netflix’s latest docuseries puts Aaron Rodgers, one of the most fascinating figures in sports, in the spotlight. Among the NFL’s most talented quarterbacks over the last two decades, the former Super Bowl champion and multi-time MVP has become known for a lot more than his performance on the gridiron in recent years. This three-part series delves into, well, all of that as it traces his comeback in the wake of tearing his Achilles just minutes into his first season with the New York Jets. All three episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
