Unlucky 13: Sabres' skid equals playoff drought

0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Sabres extended the third-longest winless streak in team history to 13 games and fell into a tie for the worst record in the NHL with a 3-1 loss Saturday night in Boston.

Morgan Geekie scored the winning goal on a power play for the Bruins with 1:45 remaining after the Sabres challenged for offside on his scoring tally earlier in the third period. Charlie Coyle came out of the penalty box to score on a breakaway in the first period, and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter in the final minute.

JJ Peterka had a power-play goal in the second period and James Reimer made 16 saves for the Sabres, who have gone 0-10-3 since their last victory on Nov. 23. The Sabres had a 20-19 advantage in shots on goal, but were outshot 8-3 in the third period.

With an overall record of 11-19-4, the Sabres have a .382 point percentage. They are tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for the worst in the NHL, with two fewer regulation wins. That's also the same point percentage the Sabres had in 2013 when coach Lindy Ruff got fired from his first term behind the bench.

The Sabres were 16th in the NHL and 7th in the Eastern Conference with a .548 point percentage before starting their current skid.

Buffalo's next opportunity to end its skid comes Monday night on the road against the New York Islanders.
