A man who was jailed for sexually assaulting a child was a headteacher at a primary school, it has been revealed.

Jordan Emms, 38, was sentenced to three years in prison earlier this month after being found guilty of sexual assault by touching and causing/inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The offences happened in Ulverston, Cumbria between 2018 and 2020 and involved one victim, Preston Crown Court heard.

Now, Cumberland Council has confirmed he was a headteacher at Thwaites School in Hallthwaites, Cumbria, although the offences are not linked to the school.

A council spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm Jordan Emms was employed as Headteacher at Thwaites School.

‘He was appointed following confirmation of successful references and relevant checks.

‘The safety and wellbeing of pupils is always a priority.

‘As soon as we were made aware of the allegations against him, immediate steps were taken to suspend him from the school.

‘We can confirm that these offences do not relate to his employment at Thwaites School.’

A new headteacher was appointed to replace Emms in August last year.

Emms, of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, was found guilty after a six-day trial in November.

On December 16, Judge Richard Gioserano sentenced him to three years in jail andimposed a sexual harm prevention order for seven years.

Emms will also be placed on the sex offenders register.

Detective Sergeant Mike Wallace said: ‘Emms maintained that he had not committed these abhorrent offences, however a jury concluded that he was guilty.

‘I hope the outcome of this trial, and sentence given to Emms today, can provide the victim with some reassurance that justice has been done.

‘I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse to contact police so that our officers can investigate.

‘Your report will be dealt with sensitively and professionally and you will be supported throughout our investigation.’
