Winds of 80mph to hit UK causing travel disruption with some flights cancelled

Flights at Belfast City Airport have been cancelled this morning after strong winds caused a plane to crash-land on the runway last night.

Four flights are cancelled and almost every departure before 10am has been delayed, with one flight to London Heathrow now due to depart four hours later.

Over 100 flights from Heathrow were cancelled due to bad weather yesterday, with another 80 expected to face severe delays today, primarily domestic and short-haul flights to Europe.

Overnight snow on the M62 has caused at least one lane to be closed, while dozens of ferries have also been forced to cancel due to adverse weather conditions.

Rail passengers are also set for another day of heavy disruption as Northern cancels all trains on 11 of its lines while Thameslink announces delays on a number of services.

Yellow weather warnings issues by the Met Office were lifted at 9pm on Sunday, but the forecaster has still urged travellers to be careful and has predicted a ‘Grey Christmas’ of some sunny spells and ‘extremely mild’ temperatures.
