Red Sox Reportedly Make Another Pitching Move, Sign Right-Hander

The Red Sox did quite a bit of shuffling to their pitching staff over the weekend.

Boston took a flier on left-handed starter Patrick Sandoval on Friday, one day before it swapped arms in another trade with the Chicago White Sox. Craig Breslow and company’s work continued Sunday when the club agreed to a minor-league deal with Austin Adams, as first reported by KPRC2’s Ari Alexander and confirmed by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

Adams is coming off a solid season in Oakland, where he logged a 3.92 ERA over 56 total appearances (41 1/3 innings). Prior to the right-hander’s stint with the Athletics, Adams spent time with the Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks between 2017 and 2023. He carries a career ERA of 4.10 over 155 2/3 total innings.

It remains to be seen if/when there will be a spot in Boston’s bullpen for Adams, a 2012 eight-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels. But given how the Red Sox’s group of relievers performed last season, the 33-year-old likely will have a legitimate chance to compete for a role in spring training.

As it stands, Boston has eight right-handers among its slate of relief pitchers.
