Patriots quarterback Drake Maye supported Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff with a bold stance following a turbulent week.
“I think it’s some BS, to be quite honest,” Maye told reporters after New England’s 24-21 loss to the Bills at Highmark Stadium on Sunday. “Coach Mayo, those guys, like I said, we’ve got his back, and he’s coached us hard.”
Mayo didn’t hear Maye’s sentiments until they were relayed to him, but the first-year head coach clearly appreciated the remarks. They mean something, no doubt. As do those from Patriots captain Hunter Henry.
“It means a lot. It means a lot,” Mayo told reporters during a video conference Monday morning, per a team-provided video. “Hopefully, those guys know I care about them not only as football players, but as men. That’s always been my message, and it’s been consistent all year. I care about these guys as men, and I have to continue to get better so we can get in the win column and push forward.”
Mayo’s Patriots took a step in the right direction in Buffalo, as discussed on NESN’s “Foxboro Rush” podcast. New England, which entered as a two-touchdown underdog, not only covered the spread but put forth a competitive product against Josh Allen and the Bills. It was a product Patriots fans had been searching for.
Maye’s comments complemented the on-field product, as well. It’s fair to think the all-around showing will sit well with Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
