WATCH: Ball hits roof during Big Bash League match, ends up injuring bowler’s hand

0

A rather rare incident took place during the clash between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers in Big Bash League (BBL) 2024. The match which was being played at the Docklands stadium in Melbourne, saw the ball hit the roof of the ground after getting smacked by batter Cooper Connolly.

The ball travelled high enough to touch the roof before coming straight back down at tremendous pace. Bowler Kane Richardson tried catching the ball as it came down, however failed to do so and instead ended up causing discomfort to his hand.

The incident caused the ball to be declared as a dead ball altogether due to a rule change in 2023. Earlier, such an incident would result in the batting side being given 6 runs.

Had there been no roof, Richardson may have ended up taking a simple catch to send Connolly back to the dugout. It is safe to say that both Connolly and the Perth Scorchers got very lucky here and the left-handed batter eventually went on to play an impressive inning of 66 runs, helping his side reach a fighting total of 143 in 20 overs.

However, the target of 144 wouldn’t prove to be enough for the Perth-based franchise as the Melbourne Renegades chased it with an over to spare thanks to important cameos from Tim Seifert (28) and Jacob Bethell (30).
