Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli has drawn prayers and sympathy from all around the world as news of his failing health trickled in on Monday morning. Kambli has been admitted at Akruti Hospital in Thane since this week and received bad news after medical tests over the weekend.

The 52-year-old was brought to the hospital by one of his fans who also owns the hospital in Bhiwandi’s Kalher area in Thane district and his condition is said to be stable. Kambli was admitted to the hospital on Saturday.

The medical examinations revealed clots in his brain, doctors treating him said on Monday. Dr Vivek Trivedi, who is treating Kambli (52), said the Mumbai-based former India batter initially complained of urinary infection and cramps following which he was admitted to the hospital in the Kalher area of Bhiwandi town on Saturday.

However, after a series of examinations the medical team supervising him at Akruti Hospital found clots in his brain, Trivedi informed.

A video of Kambli’s first reaction from the hospital also went viral on social media. Kambli said, pointing to the doctor, that he is only ‘alive’ because of him.

“It is because the doctor here that I am alive… All I would say is that I will do whatever sir (referring to the doctor) asks me to. People will see the inspiration that I’ll give them…” said Vinod Kambli in a PTI news agency video.

Kambli’s health was being constantly monitored and the team will carry out additional medical examinations on Tuesday, the doctor said. “We always had a cricketing image of sir (Vinod Kambli) in our mind. So, it inspired us that sir needs us and so, the entire team decide to do something for sir. He keeps telling us about his good memories,” says a doctor at Akruti Hospital.

Trivedi also said hospital in-charge S Singh has decided to provide life-long free treatment to Kambli at his medical facility.

Kambli, who played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India between 1993-2000, had recently attended the inauguration of legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai. The former India cricketer, who has been struggling with health-related issues for quite some time, appeared frail in the function which was also attended by his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar.
